Yao-Zen Liu was born in Shanghai, China. Now she is a resident of New York.

She started to learn painting at a very early age, and achieved notable success. After graduation from Shanghai Art College, she worked at the Shanghai Painting and Sculpture Research Academy for seventeen years as a professional artist. Her work was collected by Beijing National Art Gallery, and was exhibited in many major cities in China, published by newspapers and magazines.

In the early 1980s, Yao-Zen Liu came to the United States to pursue her studies in Fine Arts. She got her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Iowa. She has had solo and group exhibitions in Chicago, New York and other cities in Iowa and Indiana, as well as in Taiwan. Yao-Zen Liu is also a book illustrator for several publishers in the U.S. and in China. She is a member of The Chinese Artist' Association, American Society of Portrait Artist and The American Artists Professional League. Her biographical profile has been selected by "Who's Who in America" in the 58th edition.

Yao-Zen Liu is known for the realism of her art, which includes portraits, landscapes and still life. She has a deep interest in light, colour and the myriad of characteristics that make up the East and West cultural mosaic.
